Refaat Hamed is a natural product chemist, enzymologist and scientific entrepreneur, and serves as CSO and Director of BioSycle. His core expertise spans synthetic biology design, protein engineering and industrial biotechnology process optimisation. He founded BioSycle to commercialise proprietary intellectual property developed under his supervision, including the SolTag protein-solubility tags and enzyme platforms for greener manufacturing. Refaat has led research on non-canonical amino acids and biocatalytic route design, generating IP, publications and joint patents with multi-billion-pound chemical manufacturers. He is an assistant professor of chemical biology at the University of Bradford, where he contributes extensively to teaching, curriculum development and student mentoring. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he combines academic leadership with a strong commitment to training the next generation of scientists.
