Refaat Hamed
BioSycle
Refaat Hamed is a natural product chemist, enzymologist and scientific entrepreneur, and serves as CSO and Director of BioSycle. His core expertise spans synthetic biology design, protein engineering and industrial biotechnology process optimisation. He founded BioSycle to commercialise proprietary intellectual property developed under his supervision, including the SolTag protein-solubility tags and enzyme platforms for greener manufacturing. Refaat has led research on non-canonical amino acids and biocatalytic route design, generating IP, publications and joint patents with multi-billion-pound chemical manufacturers. He is an assistant professor of chemical biology at the University of Bradford, where he contributes extensively to teaching, curriculum development and student mentoring. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he combines academic leadership with a strong commitment to training the next generation of scientists. Through BioSycle, he aims to accelerate enzyme-powered innovation and enable greener, faster biomanufacturing of high-value chemicals, helping to build a more sustainable world with global industrial and academic partners.
About the Enterprise

BioSycle tackles a core bottleneck in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing: many valuable products are too costly, slow or polluting to make because key enzymes are unstable, poorly soluble or simply unavailable at scale.

Their solution is an enzyme-engineering and synthetic-biology platform that discovers, engineers and stabilises new biocatalysts. Using the SolTag® protein-solubility technology and route-design expertise, they deliver greener, faster biomanufacturing processes for high-value chemicals such as non-canonical amino acids and APIs.

In 5–10 years, BioSycle aims to be a leading partner for enzyme-powered manufacturing, enabling a global network of industrial sites to cut cost, waste and emissions while accelerating access to next-generation medicines and sustainable materials.
